Vengeance is Mine!

There is a scene in the movie “Gladiator”, as the star of the movie reveals his true identity: “…and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.” That line resonates with me, and many others I’m sure, as it is so easy to feel that way when we are wronged or when our ego is hurt. And it is so much easier to feel wronged when it is family! I have to admit, I’m talking more to myself here. I have had to interact on a daily basis with a relative of mine, and as soon as I begin thinking that we’re making some serious progress, I find out about some things that were said or done, and once again, I feel betrayed, and so the vengeful thoughts begin!

But, we always have to remember the following verse: “Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord.” Romans 12:19

The thirst for justice and vengeance can be overwhelming, and is almost sure to consume us if we allow it. We, as Christians, must reflect Jesus Christ, our loving Saviour, and love and forgive all others, as He loves and forgives us.

Keep in mind the following as it is written in 1 Peter 5:8 “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” We may be trying as hard as we can to walk with Jesus everyday, and at times it will feel easy, but the devil is always on the prowl, waiting to take us down when we least expect it. Just because life has become more difficult, does not mean we should give up and succumb to our nature. It is, in fact, the perfect time to become a stronger Christian, the perfect time to learn to forgive even when it seems incredibly difficult. My fellow warriors in Christ, be strong and courageous! Do not give in to the devil!
