How Busy Are We Really?

Time. There just never seems to be enough time. By the time we get through our full time job, eat, and rest, so that we can go back to the same job the next day all over again, it seems like free time is impossible to find. We can’t find time to pray, study the Word, or participate in other activities that would help us stay God centered.

I was recently at a men’s group one morning, and the topic of the day was “A Man and His Time”. Since that morning, I have not been able to stop reflecting on that topic. Would you believe me if I told you, after working 40 hours a week, and sleeping 8 hours a night, we are left with 72 hours free every week? This is 8 free hours per workday, and 16 free hours per weekend day.  72 hours a week, during which we can study the Word, pray, or fellowship with others.

And yet, we “don’t have time”. I think it is more an issue of Time Management. In fact, speaking for myself, that definitely is the issue. It is all about priorities. Until we make Jesus the Lord of everything in our lives, and make Him our priority in life, we will never have enough time.

Here’s something that also hit me pretty hard recently: there is no reason why work should be a separate thing in our lives, separate from our relationship with God. The workplace is also our mission field. Our coworkers and customers are also in need of the saving grace of Jesus, just as we are, just as much as our families and friends are. And since that is the case, did we not just make these 40 hours a week at work suddenly become relevant in this journey to glorify our God?

Matthew 28:19-20 NASB  19. “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20. teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

In order to follow through with this command, we must equip ourselves with the Word of God, the Bible. It’s not just going to come to us on its own. If we don’t do it on purpose, it will not happen by accident. We must make time to study the Word, and learn as much as we can. There is plenty of time for this, as long as we make God the priority in our lives. I, too, once thought that there just isn’t enough time. Trust me, there is plenty of time in our day to day activities.
